In may 1960 the USSR shot down an American U-2 spy plane in soviet air property. The spy was captured his name was Francis Gary Powers. President Eisenhower was forced to admit the United States CIA had been flying spy missions over the USSR for several years. The soviets pressed charges and sentenced him to 10 years in jail. But after only serving less than 2 years he was released in exchange for a soviet agent. This incident raised major tensions between the US and the soviets in the Cold War.
