October 4th 1957 Soviet Union launched Sputnik successfully. This was the worlds first artificial satellite. It weighed 183 pounds and was about the size of a basketball taking only 98 minutes to orbit the earth. This was to advance in political, military, technological, and scientific development. This event marked the space age, the race between US and USSR. The size of Sputnik was more impressive than Vanguards 3.5lb payload. The US feared that with the soviets capability to launch their ballistic missiles, in which carried nuclear weapons. The soviets launched a second satellite. November 3rd; Sputnik II carrying more payload, including a dog, Laika. When Sputnik 1 was launched in October, US defense department responded by funding another satellite project for the US. January 31 1958 the US launched explorer I, a satellite carrying a small payload. The explorer discovered magnetic radiation belts around earth. Sputnik led to the formation of NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration).
