Bay of Pigs-
In January 1961 US government ended relations with Cuba and began preparations for a invasion. The plan was to destroy Castro’s small air force so his military could not resist the invaders. On April 15, 1961 Cuban exile group went to Nicaragua in a squadron of American B-26 Bombers. Painted to look like stolen Cuban planes. They were going to carry out the strike on Cuban airfields. But Castro had been advised about the raid and moved his planes to safety. Kennedy was aggravated. It was too late to stop. On April 17th the Cuban brigade started an invasion on an isolated spot on the islands Southern shore- the Bay of Pigs. This was a disaster; unexpected coral reefs sank, some exile ships were pulled into the shore. Paratroopers landed in wrong places. Castro’s troops eventually pinned the invaders on the beach. Exiles surrendered. 114 were killed and 1,100 were taken as prisoners.
